YES/NO: The Language of Division

Greece’s Referendum in pictures

Following months of negotiations between the newly elected government in Greece and our European partners regarding the national debt, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced a referendum late at night on 26 June 2015. The world stopped – or at least, that’s what it felt like for Greek citizens during the days that followed. Banks closed and capital controls were introduced, and cash withdrawals were limited to sixty euros a day. Conversations, rumours, and speculation filled the air.

In the week leading up to the vote, Athens became a city of rallies. Supporters of YES and NO gathered in Syntagma Square, waving flags and holding banners that mirrored the country’s inner division.

Much has been written about that summer. This is what I saw in Athens during those days.
